Love in the SCA
Gavin Kent, 2021
O’ love is seldom easy, this is a thing that’s known;
Whether you are but a child, or old and wise and grown.
But tho love it is beautiful, grows stronger day by day;
there are some special challenges to love in the SCA.
Chorus
Hold tight to your sweetheart,
take heed to what I say.
There care some special challenges
to love in the SCA.
Well if your love’s a Laurel, you’ll know when things are right;
Chances are you’ll hear them lecture in their sleep at night.
They know their stuff, you must agree, they always know the way.
And then before you know it, you’re an A&S display.
(Chorus)
If your love’s a herald, there’s some things you should know;
Like tinctures, charge and metals, and which way a bend should go.
Rest assured they think you’re swell, your laughter and your smile;
It’s just that there’s a discord thread on art in the period style!
(Chorus)
If you love a fencer, my compliments to you;
Their eyes are keen, their ways refined, their passions swift and true.
It’s not that they’ll forsake you, or ever let you fall;
It’s just that your retirement funds are hanging on the wall.
(Chorus)
If pelicans do turn your head, then never have a doubt;
They’ll always help around the house, and when you both go out.
But after the event is done, your feet all tired and sore;
You might find yourself in the dark as they say “one thing more!”
(Chorus)
So many ways to find a love, but surely there are more;
If one is fine, then what of two? Or three, or maybe four?
Yes some of us all here about, cannot with one abide…
So keep this song about you as a quick and handy guide.
(Chorus)
Cupid flings his darts about, and surely they’ll strike true, Perhaps also the gentle who has great love for you! Embrace their slings and arrows, their axes, knives and spears, And you will be their bullseye for all your many years.
(Chorus)If your love fights heavy, well truly you are blessed.
Pin your favor boldly, upon their helm or breast.
One problem lies before you tho, and yes you know it well;
Tis how to say with love “my dear, pray what IS that smell?”
(Chorus)
(slower)
Now IF you are the lucky soul, who’ll chance to love a bard.
Rest assured you life is blessed, you road will not be hard.
Our hearts are light, our fingers deft, we’re such a lot of fun.
Oh, say… it’s not a problem right, that everything’s a pun?
(Chorus with finality, repeat last stanza)
